Rehabilitation Services
The Rehabilitation Department at New England Pediatric Care offers a full range of services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology and therapeutic recreation. The general goal of rehabilitation services is to promote or maintain the maximum level of function, comfort, and overall well-being of each resident and day student.
Rehabilitation services works in collaboration with other departments to facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to care. The Rehabilitation department supports the belief that a team approach to care is crucial in assuring the continuity of care and quality of life for all residents and day students.
Therapeutic Recreation (TR) services, including an aquatics program, are provided under the direction and supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Recreation services are provided 7 days per week with evening activities taking place on the weekdays. Individualized recreation programs are established by a CTRS and are implemented by TR staff. All residents are encouraged to take part in recreation activities in accordance with individual needs, abilities, and interests. Recreation services also plans seasonal activities and a variety of special events and field trips. Some examples of these activities include pet therapy, horticulture therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, camping trips, and holiday events.
Occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech language pathology services are provided through a direct and/or consultative service delivery model. Consultative services are provided within the school and young adult programs, and on the nursing units. These services are available to all residents and day students in accordance with individual needs. OT, PT, and Speech work closely with classroom teachers to promote carry over of goals.
Occupational therapy and physical therapy services work closely with a physiatrist, orthotist and durable medical equipment suppliers to ensure that the equipment, mobility and positioning needs of the residents are met.
